Dell Optiplex gx280 Desktop P4 2.8ghz - which RAM please?

Hi folks, thanks for an excellent forum :)

Anyway, I got one of the above recently, but with only 512MB installed. Since I use PC's for music I need at least a Gig.

I checked the spec of the installed RAM and it appears to be DDRII 400 PC3200 CL3, so far so good.

However, I keep finding conflicting information on the pin spec: most PC3200 RAM ive found is 184-pin, but in more than one place ive seen mention that this Optiplex uses 240-pin. However, when I try to find such RAM I invariably find it's only for servers, and though I have the Dell spec from their site, it doesnt quote RAM pin size.

Im not at home at the moment so cant check if anything on the motherboard tells you what pin-size and I dont recall the RAM chip I looked at making mention of it.

Can anyone resolve this once-and-for-all? DDRII 400 184-pin or 240-pin?

(P.S: I am not techie but have at least a grasp of the right terms - a bit like me being able to read French but not necesarily understand it when it's spoken to me ;D )

Hi newcomer and welcome to the Tom's hardware forum.

The RAM for the GX280 is DDR2 240 pin.

Hi Saint19 :)

Thankyou! As simple as that then LOL? At first I thought this, and then as I say the conflicting views left me nervous about just going ahead and installing a stick without further investigation.

Actually, now I recall one of those conflicting views came from an actual memory site - Mr Memory? When I entered the spec of the Gx280 as above, it told me it was DDR2 533mhz, when the other stick already installed is DDR 400.

But thanks again, much appreciated :)
