Hello I am new to this website I just make an account to ask this question, Can I air cool a i7 3820 and get up to 4.6Ghz? Right now I have an H100 in my wishlist but i'm on a $1800 budget so I want to save a few bucks and go with a Cooler Master Hyper 212 if that would get the job done?

Please anything would be great I just need a quick and short answer if possible!

The real answer is maybe. No 2 chips overclock the same and there is no way of knowing until you try. Why do you need 4.6Ghz? Are you running a multi high end GPU setup or do you use video editing or encoding software?

If your CPU is capable you will need at least a mid to high end air cooler. The big coolers will not block RAM slots if you have low profile RAM. The 3820 is a 130w TDP CPU and will need more than a Hyper 212.

I record gameplay at 1080p, edit and render at 1080p also I play emulators like PCSX2 and JCPSP running on two 1080p monitors also I encode anime from blu-ray rips. So you think the stock 3.6Ghz is enough or do I need to overclock it? I've seen videos on YouTube of people overclocking the i7-3920 with the H100

Oh if you get a "K" model processor then by all means overclock the crap out of it. Just don't have an arbitrary number in mind before overclocking. Your chip might do 4.8Ghz on air or it might only do 4.2Ghz. You just never know until you try.

You will need something like the Noctua DH 14 or the Phanteks TC14 to cool an 130w TDP chip though. You could also go with the H100.

LGA 1155 is a cheaper platform than LGA 2011. In my opinion the only reason to get an LGA 2011 platform is for the 6 core chips. The 2600K is a beast of a CPU.

Nope, sorry I don't play BF3 at all. No XBox either for that matter. The only console I have is a Wii and I don't think I have even played it in 3 or 4 years.

I see the op has changed his choice in CPU. I wanted to point out the Noctua NH-D14 will do an excellent job cooling a 3820 with a decent overclock (was running that cooler prior to switching to water). The D-14 will fit on an Asus socket 2011 board with an X-socket with no additional hardware needed. If you don't have an X-socket board, you simply have to contact Noctua and they will send you a free socket 2011 hardware kit for your 2011 (they request a cop of your invoice proving you either have a 2011 proc, or a 2011 mobo).

The main reason I recommend the 2011 is for the 40 version 3.0 PCI Express lanes allowing you to run quad sli at 16x , 16x using 690's or 590's. As a bonus Ivy Bridge Extreme will be released soon and will be on the 2011 socket as well so there is life left in it.

Thermalright "Macho Rev. A." and "Maco 120."

"Macho 120" is only 150mm tall, so far the shortest 120mm fan tower cooler one can find in the market.

"Macho Rev. A" is unbeatable performance and quiet!

Battlefield 3 on PC is meant to be played on keyboard, as any other FPS game. However I do use the Xbox 360 controller to play racing games, like F1 2012, Dirt3, etc.

By the way, the 2600K processors do not go hot like the i7 3820 while overclocked, so for only $30 you can get the Hyper 212 EVO http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103099

I know this is an old post but I'm running the 3820 as well with a CM 212 EVO but I also installed another identical fan reversed on the opposite side hooked to the CPU OPT fan plug for a push pull design and it works well.
