Ram is not backwards compatible, the pin counts and positions are different. You can use DDR2 with a motherboard that supports DDR2. You can use DDR with a motherboard that supports DDR. You can use DDR3 with a motherboard that supports DDR3. There is no intermixing.

Some mobotherboards I believe can support both by having slots for both but you cannot use different types of ram in one kind of slot.

However, I do not think that is what the OP was getting at.

That is true but I was just saying it isn't what one would call truly backwards compatible.

And I know I just wanted to correct that post from stan2

Is there such thing as DDR 5 Motherboards??? Or just DDR 5 Video Cards??? Is DDR 5 Video Cards comptible to DDR 2 Motherbboards??? Please reply...

System RAM and Video RAM (VRAM) work independently of each other.

Since you posted this question in the Graphics Card section I assume you are asking if you can install a video card that uses DDR3 or DDR5 VRAM in your computer that probably only uses DDR2 RAM.

The answer is yes. My Abit IP35Pro motherboard only accepts DDR2 System RAM, but I have a HD 5850 video card installed which uses DDR5 VRAM.
