Simplify storage and Backup

I hope I am posting this in the correct area.

I just built a new rig for my brother, and when I brought it over to his house, I got a peek at his external storage and backup. He has 4 external drives, of various sizes, with about 1.5 TB of total memory used.

I suggested combining the data to 2 drives, mounting them internally (he has room for them) and then backing everything up to an external, that will also back up his other desktop and laptop in the house. Can I add a drive that already has data on it, and format it to the new computer without losing data?

OS is win 7 pro

any other thoughts or insight would be appreciated.

Formatting will erase all data on that drive.... sounds like you can move your Data around to other drives and not lose anything.

I want to take a drive from an external case, and use it internally. Will win 7 see and accepet the drive, and the information on it, or will it lose all of it?
