I am a computer geek wannabee. A few months ago I decided that I wanted to reset my 2 year old notebook to factory settings. Well....... ever since I cannot get my computer to recognize the dvd drive. It doesn't show up under device mgr or under "my computer". Have tried in dv mgr to "add legacy hardware", but... it still doesn't give me the dvd drive to install.
Does anyone have a clue? I will try not to do this again.

I am not sure, I have taken the drive out and put it in another notebook and it works, when I did a recovery I used "F11" and I have Vista 32bit premium and I have a HP Pavillion 9617nr.
Any help or suggestions are GREATLY APPRECIATED

Does anyone know how to test the motherboard to see if it is malfunctioning? HP insists that it is the motherboard, but I really think they just gave up on helping me because they didn't know what else to do!
