Can anyone recommend good, small, speakers that I can throw in the bag
with the laptop ? There is no reason why two speakers, each the size
of a pack of cigarettes with built-in amplifiers couldn't sound
decent, powered by two AA batteries, or off the USB port.

Even better, a built-in sound chip and an digital audio over the USB
cable, eliminating the need for batteries. This would require
a driver on the laptop, but that's not a problem.

Any suggestions ?

I guess it depends on what your definition of "decent" is.

Unlikely that speakers the size of a cigarette pack would sound very good,
although possibly an improvement over the built-in speakers of the laptop.

IN fact, I think I saw some in a catalog just like you are describing--very
small, USB powered. I forget exactly where I saw them though. It might have
been the Mobile Planet catalog. Take a look at www.mobileplanet.com

I also have tried some from Si-5. Larger than you specify, about the size of
a portable CD player (can fit in a case for same. Flat speakers. Can be
powered via USB, or batteries, or AC. But also not very good sound, despite
the hype. I think only 2w per channel. You can see them at:

www.si5.com (I think, or perhaps it's si-5, with a hyphen)
