There are a lot of testing programs in the "Step-By-Step Guide to Building a PC" (Step 10 I think). Start with those.

The best practical way would be to stick in a new game and fire it up. Or do something that took a really long time on your old computer. Though, these don't really have metrics involved with them...

I did test it with a program when i first got it running and i will post those results when i get back home but what I'm mainly asking for a program or a game that will really put this to the test. My friend has GTA4 that he will let me borrow and then I'm going to put everything to the top and see how it runs. My main goal is hd video editing and if possible a dvr for my satellite.

Crysis is the universal standard as a game for testing. So far, only the HD 5870 and 5970 cards have maxed the game out.

That doesn't exactly test all the different aspects of the machine though.

most like though wouldn't 2 5770 (cross fire) max the game out?
What about a way to put the processor to test? ( not a testing program but another way)
just curious
thanks for your help so far

Maybe. But I'm going to guess not.

Here are links to the charts section. Pick a benchmark or two to test the CPU or GPU out. You might have to play around with the settings to get what you need.

Memtest86+ is good at detecting faulty RAM.

Prime95 is good for stressing the CPU, motherboard, and RAM. You can pick from three different torture tests that each stress the system in a different way. I would run each torture test overnight after an overnight run of Memtest86+. Furmark is supposed to be good at stressing the GPU. I've never used it, though.

These are more for stability testing than judging performance. Use the above benchmarks to see if the performance seems to be where it's supposed to be.
