I AM BUYING A NEW COMPUTER WITH 2 HDs. IS IT A GOOD IDEA TO HAVE OS AND PROGRAM FILES ON ON HD AND DATA ON ANOTHER? I USE CARBONITE FOR BACKUP.

I do it so I can do a periodic clean install of the OS - using one HDD for the data means the clean install doesn't wipe out that data when I reinstall the OS and programs files to the other HDD. I still perform regular backups because I never know when a HDD will fail.

Personally, if you have some other external way to backup or you don't care what gets lost I would do a raid 0 and stripe the hard drives to increase your performance. By striping the drives you would get a really nice performance increase provided they are the same size and the motherboard supports it (which most do).
