Can the fan wire of smps be cut and joined

i tried to replace the smps fan.for this i cut the wire and tried to connect another fan.but the fan didn't work.......What may be the problem?

The original fan did it just stop working or is it just makeing a ton of noise?

Three possibilities:
The replacement fan is defective. Did you test it first?
The original fan stopped because the PSU is defective.
Inadequate repair job.

What kind of PSU? What kind of replacement fan?

Like jsc said they are the main reasons it would not be working. When you cut the wires from the old fan did you cut them one at a time or did you cut them all at the same time?

When you connected the new fan, how did you connect the two ends of the wire? A crimped connection insulated with standard insulation tape is always the best.

Actually, a neatly soldered splice insulated with heatshrink is best. :)
