Windows XP as encrypted hotspot?

Forum Wireless Networking : Setup, Configuration & Security Windows XP as encrypted hotspot?

I have a hardwired cat5 connection for my Windows XP laptop, and want to use the built-in wireless as an encrypted hotspot (with a SID, NOT ad hoc mode) so that I can connect my smartphone via wifi.

Is that possible? (or is there software to enable this without buying an external router?)

The only product that I'm aware of that allows your wireless adapter to be supported in infrastructure mode is Connectify. But that only supports Windows 7. I'm sure there are other wireless adapters (although rare) that support it directly. But unless you need to multiple wireless clients, I don't see why adhoc wouldn't suffice, esp. since every wireless adapter is capable.
