How can you find out a hard drive's manufacturing date?

Specifically, external HDs that I don't/can't break open to look at the physical disk inside. Is there a way to look it up by serial number? Upon a cursory Google search I came up empty.

I think the date will be on the hard drive label inside the enclosure.
You should be able to figure out how they got the drive inside the enclosure in the first place; it can't be that difficult.

Or, if you know the manufacturer, the serial number should be linked to the manufacturing date.
Call the manufacturer customer support. If it is for warranty purposes, that is what they will ask for.
