Laptap will not start windows xp keeps restarting

Hello,
I have a hp pavilion laptop with windows xp. It crashed out 2years ago & I haven't had time to get it fixed til about now. When I turn it on the screen says it was not closed down properly and will try to start in so many seconds. Windows xp screen pops up and tries to start, the blue loading thing down the bottom continues til it reboots to the screen saying it wasn't shut down correctly & will start again. This is all my laptop will do, is there any way to fix it or at least recover my files?

Try booting safe mode - Select disable Automatic restart on system error.
May have to then research the stop code on a bsod (using another computer). But if you have the Windows CD, repair the OS.
