backlight off after resuming from standby

Hi,

when I leave my laptop (compaq evo n620c) on overnight and it goes to
standby, the backlight doesn't come back on when I turn it back on.

I can hear the drive sping up and the light on the wireless card is on,
which makes me think it's all running, but the screen is off and I have to
then do a hard reset to re-boot the thing. This has only started to happen
in the last few weeks.

any ideas?
