Pentium i7 vs quad core

Hello,
i7-860 processor(8MB Cache, 2.80GHz) and 8GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz-4x2GB sound like a good system to run multiple graphics applications?

Depends on the graphics applications.

The i7-860 is a bit overpriced though - I'd go i7-920 or i7-930 to be honest. Cheaper CPU but more expensive motherboard works out about the same, but X58 has more life I think than P55.
