HDMI on the 5850 doesnt work?

I am trying to get it to work on my 40inch samsung series 5 lcd, the VGA works, but im not used to the catalyst control center and i dont know how to get the gpu to work out of the HDMI to the tv as it doesnt work automatically. Do I need to start my PC or the tv to get it working or is it plus and play?
