6GB of RAM showing as having only 2.99GB as usable

I have a motherboard with triple channel memory. I originally bought a dual memory kit 2x2gb(4gb total) and upon realizing I had triple channel I then bought an additional 2 gig of Ram with exact same specs to fill out the 3rd slot giving me 6Gigs of Ram. However when I go to system properties it shows I have 6 Gigs of ram but in Parentheses right next to it it says 2.99 Gigs usable. I was wondering what may be wrong. Did I specifically have to buy originally a triple channel kit? Thanks in advance for any help with this.

Best regards.

First question... You are running a 64-bit operating system?

32-bit OS can only utilize up to 4GB of RAM but system resources allocate RAM, which leaves you only 2.99 usable. To be able to see / use the full 6GB of RAM, you'll need to upgrade to a 64-bit OS (Windows 7 or Vista... avoid XP 64-bit)

Hi newcomer and welcome to the Tom's hardware forum.

Like tecmo34 says Win 7 32 bits only can use 3GB or u can play with the kernel to use more that 4GB.
