GA-890GPA-UD3H rev1.0 Controller Face off

I recently purchased this motherboard and had questioned the performance of the controllers on this board as they seemed "slow" to me. Gigabyte's techsupport said there shouldnt be any performance difference between the "ONBOARD" and "ONCHIP" SATA controllers, but there clearly are differences.

I used Crystal Mark 3.0 (x64) edition to perform these tests, and surprisingly the best controller was the Gigabyte GB336X controller (ONBOARD) in just native IDE mode.

I need speed and size, so an SSD doesnt work for me. I tried RAID0 with two 500mbs drives I had with the AMD controller, but it was actually slower than the 1TB Samsung drive which made no sense to me. So I wanted to test this out further, and here is what I found.

So it appears that the GB336X IDE MODE ("ONBOARD") controller is the fastest of them all.

  1. Good stuff! The RAID 0 results are surprising?! Perhaps look into a dedicated RAID controller for your particular MOBO. I'm coming to the realization GA is not the ideal choice for RAID.

    Have you looked into Solid State Hybrid Drives?
  2. Yes, I actually ordered a 60GB OCZ SSD drive from newegg thearlier this week. Waiting for it to come in, which should be here this week which Ill use as my boot drive, and possibly my file crunching drive depending on size thats left after the OS install.

    I am going to post the raid0 results, I just ran out of time in my testing. I used the AMD side for Raid0, and had about the same kind of performance as the IDE on the Gigabyte controller. They are two WD Drives at 500mbs each. I definately want to test the raid0 performance on both the AMD onchip, and Gigabyte Onboard controllers. I still have no idea what that means between onchip and onboard, gigabyte didnt explain that in their techsupport. I just found it interesting that there is two controllers onboard tho.. for what reason I have no idea.
  3. Here is the AMD Raid controller results... pitiful if you ask me. I dont know why these scores are so bad when RAID0 is supposed to be very quick...

    The Samsung drive on the native gigabyte controller in IDE mode smokes this test.

    Ill need to rebuild these drives all over again on the Gigabyte Controller in RAID mode if I am going to test this further. Im not sure at this point if its worth it or not with these kind of results.
