I want a system for about 300. It's just a backup for me to mess around with. I already have a case, power supply, and a hard drive.

Do you need an OS?

That board you suggested (ASUS M4A78 Plus) doesn't have integrated graphics. If you don't have a GPU to use you'll need something that does like the GIGABYTE GA-MA785GM-US2H AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 785G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.320259

This is not a recommendation, I haven't done any research on these boards. Just as an example.

That board you picked actually looks decent to me. With that combo the ram i chose an optical drive and some case fans I'm looking at 240 without a monitor. I have an operating system. You think I'm good?

It looks pretty good. I don't see any issues any more and the hardware is more recent than the original stuff you picked out. I'm not AMD expert though so it wouldn't hurt if someone else browsing this thread now would give a thumbs up or down and say why.
