Thoughts on budget build?

I want a system for about 300. It's just a backup for me to mess around with. I already have a case, power supply, and a hard drive.

  1. Why not consider an Athlon II? Where are you making your purchase? For example the AMD Athlon II X2 250 Regor 3.0GHz Socket AM3 65W is running $67 from New Egg. They've got a number of combo deals going:
  2. Hows this:

    Crucial 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model CT2KIT12864AA800

ASUS M4A78 Plus AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard
    AMD Athlon II X2 250 Regor 3.0GHz Socket AM3 65W Dual-Core Processor Model ADX250OCGQBOX

    Combo $131.99
  3. Do you need an OS?

That board you suggested (ASUS M4A78 Plus) doesn't have integrated graphics. If you don't have a GPU to use you'll need something that does like the GIGABYTE GA-MA785GM-US2H AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 785G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail:

This is not a recommendation, I haven't done any research on these boards. Just as an example.
  4. That board you picked actually looks decent to me. With that combo the ram i chose an optical drive and some case fans I'm looking at 240 without a monitor. I have an operating system. You think I'm good?
  5. It looks pretty good. I don't see any issues any more and the hardware is more recent than the original stuff you picked out. I'm not AMD expert though so it wouldn't hurt if someone else browsing this thread now would give a thumbs up or down and say why.
