Thinkpad 560x and Fujitsu MHT2040AT upgrade

Hi all,

This is just a 'public record' announcement to say that
I have successfully upgraded my Thinkpad 560x with a
Fujitsu MHT2040AT 40-gig hard drive and installed Linux
on it. (Yes it can be done.) I did not try to do an MSDOS
or Windoze install since I don't use those.

The basic steps were:
1. put Slackware version 10 "a" series files on flash card
2. create Slackware boot/root/pcmcia disks
3. install drive
4. boot Slackware with flash card in PCMCIA using adapter
5. create Linux boot & swap partitions, and small FAT
partition in lower 6 gigs
6. create 33-gig partition in the remaining area
7. run pcmcia script and mount flash drive.
8. install Linux in lower Linux partition
9. use PCMCIA network card to obtain remaining Linux packages.

FYI, the 40 gig drive appears to be considerably
faster than the original 4 gig drive.

Excellent - congrats. I bet the new drive's quieter too. Now how on earth
will you ever fill up all that space ? :-)

Darned if I know. I do know this: if/when this computer dies,
I'll just put the 40 gigger into a 2.5 inch USB external enclosure
and use it as my portable drive. Enclosures seem to go for $20+.

Incidentally my original plan was to use the MHT2020AT
which is 20GB, and costed $70 from newegg.com. But the 40GB was only
$85. I couldn't resist...

Looking at their prices, I see the 60gig is $118 and the 80gig is $159
at newegg. Thus, at 40gigs and above the cost is around $2 per gig.
Not bad!
