Video Card for 270 watt PS?

What respectable video cards only require 270 watt PS's? The reason being, I got an HP slimline s5216f-b for christmas. Just want to be able to run World at War and COD4.

If the OP only run 1 hard drive, 1 cd/dvd drive, maybe 4650 or even 4670, but it can't be sure, his PSU is just too low...

Maybe you can choose for the nvidia 240 GT, its requires 70 watt and its excellent for cod4 and cod5

Hey zspm23,

First, you should be aware that you need to limit your search to "Low-Profile" graphic cards because you have such a narrow PC. These will cost a bit more than their normal size equivalents. While either the 4670 or GT 240 would be good cards for your PSU-I am not aware of a low profile version of the GT 240 or 4670.

Keeping this in mind, you can find a low profile 4650 which would very safely run on your power supply, or you can find a low profile 9600GT-- which is actually more powerful than the 4670 but which would be pushing the limits of your PSU.
(Nvidia recommends 350w PSUs to run it--but it actually takes less)

I would be very cautious of running a 9600GT in a system with only a 270w power supply. It depends on how much amperage is on the 12v rail. There are low profile GT 220's that would work if you are partial to Nvidia. Make sure that you get one with GDDR3 instead of GDDR2.

My brother has it for quit some time now and it plays every single game with maximum settings at 1280x1024
I played Modern Warefare on it and it's really a treat
Your PSU cannot run 4670

Go For 4650

This is not true. Even an HD4670 will struggle in a good number of games with maxed out settings at that resolution and it is a good amount more powerful. Also your brother's card may be the DDR3 version of the HD4650 which is no longer sold and a good amount better than the DDR2 version.

I agree, especially one of the older 9600GTs that require a power connector and unfortunately the low profile 9600GT is one of them.

64-bit and DDR2 sounds pretty ugly. He is probably better off with a GT 220. The options aren't good for low profile + weak psu right now.

It's not DDR3 but it is SAPPHIRE RADEON 4650 HD 1 GB DDR2

If you don't trust me read some articles about 4650
or ask someone else who has one

I'm familiar with the benchmarks and have been gaming at that resolution on a significantly more powerful card(9600GSO OCed over 25% to 700mhz) and there are quite a few games that cause it to struggle with settings maxed. Perhaps you should try games more intensive than COD4. There are a lot of them.

I'm not wrong at all. First off there's simply no way you are maxing out Crysis on that card so that is a blatant lie. My OCed 9600GSO should be approximately on par with a 9800GT which is much more powerful than a DDR2 HD4650. Off the top of my head games that need some settings turned down(and I'm not even including AA) to run smoothly were Crysis, GTA IV, Far Cry 2, Stalker, Red Faction Guerrilla, Lost Planet, Borderlands and Bioshock. I'm certain I'm forgetting a good number of games that I've uninstalled, never mind many that I haven't even played.

Glad to see the replys. I do think the 4650 is the safer option--just threw the 9600 out there to see if he possibly had the amperage.

If you find a decently priced GT 220 make certain you get the gddr3 version.

(I do want to note that I really think jyjjy does know what hes talking about here...)

Well, what can i say
I have seen it many times that he is playing Crysis, as a matter of fact, i bought the card and i placed the resolution at 1280x1024, since i knew Crysis is a damn demanding game so there is no AA
All games you listed except lost planet and Stalker, He has all and plays it really smoothly
I don't know how to convince you dude

Sure you have alot of experience in this section which i respect alot, but I wish you were here and watch that 4650 playing crysis at 12810x1024.
I just ran crysis to check if i am wrong but i wasn't
Graphic options are set to HIGH with no AA
VSync is off and Shader Quality is medium

That page and the following 3. Note that Crysis Warhead can't even break 10 fps average. A frame rate which never strays below 30 fps is usually considered the standard goal for smooth game play and the card averages well below it in a lot of the games and barely above it in most. The 1360x768 resolution they use(1.04 million pixels) is actually significantly lower than the 1280x1024(1.31 million pixels) we are talking about.

and I am taking about DirectX 9


But there shouldn't be much performance gap.

This old 270W PSU may not be up to the task of todays video card design. It may even have higher noise level and almost dried-up capacitor.

Good brand PSU are coming cheap these days specially on the low lend of POWER CAPACITY. A 400W to 500W Antec PSU can be purchased for less than $50.

Yes, of course he can PLAY it, i believe u, but not with highest setting, even my 4850 is still struggle on HIGH setting(Crysis)...
But, 4650 is a DDR2 card, which is real slow, if u want get a card then go at least card that have DDR3 on it.

For the OP, it's really hard, your PSU is just too low, i suggest u get a new higher one, but if u still want to use it then 4650 or 4670 maximum...
