Which is faster using a Core i5-750(P55),one Radeon 5850 using all 16 lanes
of PCI Express or two 4890's dividing 16 lanes running in CrossFire?

crossfired 4890s. the 8+8 setup has very little impact on gaming performance... some site made tests about pcie scaling some time ago (like 6 months or so), but forgot where it was...

but i would still get the 5850 :P

Dual 8x doesn't have a lot of difference with dual 16x here is a good review which compares both:

Between 1 HD 5850 and 2 HD 4890s,2 HD 4890s perform better however they are more noisier and require more power.

okini55 i edited your post due to the language you used.
Also it doesn't perform way better than a HD 5850,maybe around 20-30% better

Can I pair a Radeon 5850 with a 4890 in Crossfire or for that matter any combination
of cards or do they have to be the same?

No, u can't... :)
U can't CF 4xxx series with 5xxx series.
2x 4890 are producing a lot amount of heat, also consume more power.
I think u will be safer with a single 5850. It good for the future too...

Regardless, I'd get the 5850 over crossfired 4890s

1. Cheaper
2. Plenty fast enough
3. Less heat + power
4. No technical issues with crossfire
5. Not going to be obsoleted by DX11 if/when

Pretty much seals it if you ask me.
