unable to copy and paste files in windows xp t to external drive to external drive drag and drop creates a short cut. Able to copy to drive on a diffrent computer. Reboot did not help the issue

Ran a virus scan and no luck any other suggestions?

But maybe your virus definitions are out of date so use the program I gave you above...
And make sure there are no other UNSPECIFIED programs running with the startup...because they may affect windows explorer
