No sound on my gateway windows XP laptop

Hello,

my computer has a yellow question mark next to multimedia audio controller video controller and sound controller. i have the CD to update the computer but everytime i try to start the wizard i always get the same message: "Cannot install this hardware because wizard cannot find necessary software"

the only sound i can hear is the 'bleep' warning sound when you try to exit out of something. besides that its silent. and my volume is up my headphones are not in and the volume control is working well but i cant hear anything !
