Hi all,

I'm trying to help my folks with a system upgrade and getting them off of Dell. I'm wondering if their current hard drive and cd rom can be carried over into a new system. I've heard that the existing Dell case and psu is a loss as they are proprietary to Dell's standard. Can anyone shed some light on this. Thanks in advance!

Probably, assuming they have a SATA connector.

I wouldn't count on using anything else out of it though.

They're most likely IDE but I'm haven't taken a look yet.

depends on how old the system is...

I've got a Dimension 8400 from ~2004 - it's got IDE cd/dvd drives and a sata HD

If you get a motherboard with the right connectors, sure, they will work

IDE will work in most new boards, just maybe not both. SATA is just a better bet for garaunteeing they work.
