SSD RAID 0 Stripe size 16K per Intel suggestions?

I was setting up my new 2 x OCZ Vertex 3 120GB MaxIOPS SSD in RAID 0, installing the OS, and gettting to the drivers installations. After installing Intels RApid Storage Tech (iRST v10.08.xxxx) program, and setting up the array with write-back cache, as suggested by the iRST software, I noticed something within the "help" or <?> icon for Stripe size.

Deep within the help information, Intel "recommends" a stripe size of 16K for Solid State Drives in RAID 0, and 128K for Hard Drives of the same array.

I have, after lots of reading, set up my RAID 0 arrays as 128K. Further research into this yeild very little modern information. Most articles on the web are dated, pre-2010, most 2009 or 2008, when addressing Solid State Drives (SSD).

So, I reset up everything in BIOS/RAID, and reinstalled the operating system (Win 7 Ult x64), and such. So far so good, at least it works. It does seem "snappier," but this is probably the drives themselves, being MaxIOPS (=$$). I previously had 2 x OCZ Agiltiy 3 60GB in RAID 0 for about 6 months.

Does anyone else have any further information about stripe size for SSD in RAID 0?

Lots of people say go with 128K, which I normally did, but I've even went with 64K before. The only reason I set it back to 128K is most benchmarks have a 128K Seq Read/Write stat, so I thought this may mean something.

I also know that 4K Random Read/Writes are what really matters, and don't pay too much attention to ATTO benchmarks, as they only show commpressible data rates. Please see my question about that here.

IMO I think your 128K stripe size is perfect.

I've used RAID 0 with HDD's before ( I know I know not SSD) but set the stripe size to 128K. Now i'm not sure if it was older hardware/software, but setting the stripe size lower (i think it was around 32K vs 128k) actually increased my CPU usage (note this was back in the Core 2 Duo days).

Also I believe having a higher stripe size should actually help with reading and writing to your SSD's with big files.

Although, on the flip side, I believe that having a lower stripe size would help with reading and writing smaller sized files (meaning slightly faster boot times, and reading programs and such).

Since your have pretty much have the fastest SSD's out there currently, I don't really think you would notice a real world difference between a smaller and larger stripe size.

Im short, unless you want to try out benchmarks with different sizes, I would just keep it as is.

FYi:

After the recent article about SATA 2 vs SATA 3 SSD here, and really seeing no great improvement on my system, I returned the 2 x OCZ Vertex 3 MaxIOPS 120GB SSDs, and put the OCZ Vertex 3 60GB SSDs back in my system. Too much money for little or no improvement. And the drive(s) didn't sell on craigslist (odd)!

I DID install them in RAID 0, with a 16K stripe size. Seems to work. So I'll stick with whats recommended (not always my policy).

In the following article, "RAID 0 Stripe Sizes Compared with SSDs: OCZ Vertex Drives Tested," it recommended a stripe size of 128K. This has a fairly extensive set of tests.

Althought that article is relevant and good, it's date 01-15-2010.

I was/am looking for more modern info, as SSDs have greatly changed since 2010 (e.g. SATA III, pushing 550Mbps reads).

I know this thread goes back a few months, but since I just did 'em, here's some benchmarks, albeit on Sata II, for future searchers.

Using 2 Samsung 830's, 64gb, on an x58 mobo (limited to Intel sata II because the Marvel SIII controllers on that board suck). I7 950, oc 3.8, Win 8.

From my testing, 128 stripes are the only clear loser--sequential times are way low compared to 64 and lower stripe sizes. On my system at least it looks like 128 is NOT optimal for SSD raid 0. Makes sense that the quick access times of the ssds make smaller stripes/clusters much more viable than mechanical drives. With raid 0, it's about finding the balance of making more read/writes utilize both disks up to the point that the overhead of breaking the files up starts to come in. Strange that 128 stripes had much worse seq reads/writes than any other stripe size by a big margin.

Here's a bunch of different tests at different stripe/cluster sizes. The most interesting to me is 4K Stripe/2K cluster, which saw the 4K single thread read speeds go up 10% (from 20.x to 22.x) but the 4K 32 thread Writes got cut in half. For some reason that combination is an outlier in read/write 4k speeds compared to all other tests. Weird.

I'm just testing for a read only, game setup, btw, with less that 25% of the disk in use so I don't think not having trim on my x58 board controllers is a problem. Writing speed and storage loss due to big clusters are not a concern for me.

I may not see any real world differences, but their certainly ARE differences regarding stripe/cluster sizes. I think I'll go with 8K stripe/8K cluster or maybe 16/8 for my needs.

Oh, and first I'll put the "No Raid" results. 1 of the ssds, 4K cluster size. The raid pretty much doubled performance everywhere but those single threaded 4K tests-- which were -better- than the raid(!)
