Windows XP SP3 and Win 7 32bit (dual boot)
This issue cropped up several months ago, my internal LG DVD player was all of a sudden missing in windows XP. It seemed like PowerISO was causing some sort of issue as the virtual drives were still available, just not the real DVD drive. I uninstalled PowerISO and my DVD came back.
Notably, the DVD player is present and working at all times in Win 7, so this is most certainly a Win XP software issue. The DVD is bootable from POST and is always visible in the BIOS. In XP you will not find the drive in the Device manager or in Disk Management, it is non-existent as far as XP is concerned, yet works fine and is listed in the BIOS. ie. not hardware.
Since then, on occasional reboots the DVD is missing, now it is missing period. Seems the weird intermittent issue is now permanent. I tried a reg hack (cdgone.reg), Microsoft FixIT, TuneUP utilities registry cleaner and various other utilities, including a full virus and spyware scan. The system is clean, yet no joy.
To rectify this I installed Daemon Tools virtual drive software as an alternative to PowerISO, this made the drive reappear, but after a month or so it seems to have gone again. I have tried rebooting several times and the drive still doesn't appear. I uninstalled DT this morning and rebooted, updated windows etc rebooted, the drive is still not showing. I could try to put PowerISO back on, although I doubt that will help.
I could deal with this issue if I knew what was causing it, I don't mind re-applying a fix whenever the problem crops up, but I don't always notice it until I go to burn a disc or something DVD related, AND I have yet to figure out what is actually causing the issue (although the virtual drive thing seems suspect). I have Googled the hell out of "CD DVD missing XP" etc, so if anyone has some other ideas please let me know.
