Hello, I have a old compaq 6710s notebook. I am getting a black screen message "Non-System disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready."

I have no USB connected or disk in the dvd-drive. I even tried the memory tests and startup check. I can't perform the HDD self-test options, because it is faded dark. My CD/DVD-drive does not work. I am using windows xp sp2

I am not sure what to do. I also don't want to format my hard disk and lose my data.

The best thing to do is to stop using Compaq computers.
The second best thing to do is look at the top of this forum.
Look at the directions to "repair" XP.

Open the bios settings, set the CD drive to boot FIRST.
put the disk in the drive, and turn the computer ON.
follow the directions to "repair" XP. This DOES NOT reformat the drive.
This reloads the operating system, but does not erase your personal files or programs.
When the disk boots, it will load a driver for the CD drive.
