My CD drive has become uninstalled

Can no longer use CDs on my PC. The CD drive has become uninstalled. How do I reinstall it?

This is a problem caused by updating.
Turn the automatic updates OFF.
Look at the top of this forum. Look at the directions for "repairing XP."
Once you reload XP in repair mode, the CD will work again.
If you leave automatic updates ON, the updates will wipe out the CD again.

Updates are not compatible with all computers, especially old ones. The updates cause the CD or DVD to fail.
There is NO stand alone driver. The only driver is the one that loads when XP is installed, from the XP disk.

By using "repair" mode, the XP is restored, but your personal files and programs will not be erased.
