Hi, i am building a new pc, and am wondering which graphics card would b a better buy; a GTX 295 or a 5970.

Current system specs:

-i7-920
-6gb ddr3 2000mhz ram
-lga1366 mobo supports both crossfire and sli
-750w PSU

I intend to run graphics intensive games on 1920x1080 res.
Im looking for best bang for the buck.

Which graphics card would you recommend?
Should i shell out $620 bucks for a 5970, or $500 for a gtx 295. Is the performance increase worth the extra $120 bucks?

Solution
You can always hang on to the dual 4850 setup until Nvidia shows their stuff and benches come out. I'm sure they will be out the DAY of, they usually are. Right now a 5970 would be your best bet.

What could you be playing that your current setup doesn't cut it?

I usually favor nvidia, but go with the 5970. I think the gtx 295 isn't being made any more so nvidia is just clearing out stock and the prices are artificially high. I'm sure they're going to shift their driver focus to fermi so the 295 won't get much faster with newer drivers, whereas the 5970 has a bit of room to grow.

I would have to say the 5970. If you want to go Nvidia, I would suggest waiting for their new cards to come out. Otherwise, if you are paying $500 for a card, what is another $120 for a bunch more performance? The only compelling reason to go with nvidia is they have PhysX support. Currently the only game that takes a big hit on that is Batman. I chalk that up to some sort of deal with Nvidia that causes ATI cards to perform horrible with Physics turned on.

Then why are you looking at the two halo (and wallet abusing) products?

Surely the better option is a 5850 or 5870... then later if you need more power, get another and crossfire.

You definitely do not need the best card out there.

For reference, bigger 2560x1600 monitors would double the number of pixels your GPU needs to calc and export.

Disclaimer: Unless you insist on playing the POS that is Crysis.

This is not even a contest.

A 5970 is essentially to two underclocked 5870s, or roughly equal to two underclocked GTX295s.

A 5970 overclocked to its max potential is equal to two 5870s, or almost as good as two GTX295s in QUAD SLi.

The 5970 basically bludgeons the GTX295 with a spiked club then curbs stomps it.

i play eve and we have 400 - 600+ fleet battles at one place. My fps drops to 5 everytime this happens. So yeah, i need the best card out tehre, single card , and later on i can just add another one crossfire or sli.

altho this is on my c2q Q8200 2.33ghz processor with ddr2 ram.
so i ahve yet to see how i do when my new i7-920 arrives.

well maybe not 5fps but its complicated. i can get 30-40 fps during 200-300 man battles with my current 2x 4850s and C2Q Q8200
processor, but also im running on a dell hacked mobo taht only has x8 slots. That plus my slow processor might be affecting my fps right now, so im hoping to get my new i7-920 cpu and see what performance gains i get on my dual 4850's b4 i upgrade to a 5970 or a fermi.
