Alright, first off I would like to thank you all for clicking on my beeeutiful topic.

Now to get down to business. 1 year ago I bought what I thought was a great "gaming laptop" that I built on dells website. It was a Dell XPS m1530,

specs ;

NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT
Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 ( 2 cores @ 2.00 )
15 inch screen
ect

I bought that for ~1500 dollars... and I was wondering what I could sell that for today?

I have about 800 dollars right now, and however much I could sell that laptop for would be added onto the budget for my new gaming rig I want to build.

Any advice on selling that laptop? Where to go? How much can I get?

Alright now down to my build

______________________________________________________

I would love an i7 920, that I would overclock to more then 3.5ghz? I don't know a lot about this but I heard i7's are great at speeds from 3.5-4

APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: Once I sell my laptop, maybe a coupel weeks

SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: Gaming, Gaming, Gaming, Photoshop, 3d modeling

PARTS NOT REQUIRED: Mouse- I need everything else

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: newegg.com
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: USA

PARTS PREFERENCES: Intel, Nvidia, iunno. Whatever is the best

OVERCLOCKING: Yes, i7?

MONITOR RESOLUTION:, 1920x1080

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: Thanks guys! I'll be checking this topic regularly so please post comments!

Right now I guess you could say I'm looking for some solid parts to go with the i7. Like what power supply, and graphics card. Budget is about $850 + however much I can sell this laptop for

I need everything; excluding mouse. Thanks!

Do you need a monitor? At your budget to get an i7 system with a monitor you are going to have to skip on the most important component of a gaming computer - the graphics card. Even without a monitor its going to be tight. For better gaming performance a lesser CPU with a better graphics card would perform better.

Yes, I need a monitor. What would be an ideal budget for good graphics card and an i7? Or should I go for an i5?

Thanks

For an i7 920 build for gaming at 1920x1080 & include a monitor/everything, you are looking $1,500 range as a good starting budget.

Any pricechecks on the laptop or ideas where I can sell it?

This would be a good starting point. Now add in your KB/Mouse/Speakers of your liking then a i5 750 mobo ram HSF or i7 920 mobo ram HSF

Check that model on ebay, sold auctions only, to see what a realistic selling price is.

Add an i7 920 ($280, or $230 at microcenter) and an ASRock x58 extreme ($170-$15MIR at newegg)

Then that leaves the ram, which I would like about 8gb of DDR3. So I'm guessing with this current build it will be around 1400? Like 1300 with an i5?

Alright so can I get some more suggestions for this?

I decided 6gb of ram would be enough, any suggestions for that?

i7 or i5

Suggestions for gaming soundcard?

I probably want to drop windows 7 out of that deal, I can get it elsewhere.

Suggestions for mobo compatable with i5/i7?

Thanks!

These days, the onboard audio on a decent MoBo should do just fine. I'd hold off on a soudncard until you've built your rig, see how the onboard is, and then buy a discrete soundcard if you need to.

So then all that would come to

about 1460 dollars. Any suggestions on what to change? The only thing I can think of to cut the price lower right now is get windows 7 elsewhere and get the i7 from microcenter. I would be in the 1300 ballpark.

It would be like 230 for an i7, then I wouldn't buy windows 7... so yeah, I might do that. Iunno.

As long as your OS is Vista 64-bit system, you will be okay (don't want a 32-bit system for an i7 build). Otherwise, I would get Windows7 to start with the build.

Yes, I'm getting windows 7 and definitely 64 bit so I can use all the ram. I might just get it elsewhere.
