I work almost every day in College on G4s.
They're great, but they are fast to slow down. Even with the big 640MB they are fitted with, they slow to a crawl once Photoshop and Illustrator are opened, with some IE windows. 867MHZ G4 performance is terrible.
What I really can't like of the ergonomy, is the mouse. BADLY CONCEIVED. Not the uni-click design, but the form. You simply can't move and target well, especially on a 1280*1024 screen under 19" LCDs.

The g4 866Mhz should be really slow with Photoshop 7.0, i don't know if there are any mac versions of adobe photoshop 4.

Me being an idiot, 2 fingers would sometimes touch so they'd be fighting each other in where the mouse should go. Heheh, finally called over my partner and told her to do it cause I was ready to explode lol.

You CAN get 4 button + scroll mice for a Mac you know...

my all time favorite quote from a Mac person (tho a PC person coulda said it too)
I have Verizon DSL so I need AOL to access the internet.
The one and only "Monstrous BULLgarian!"
Classic.
OK thats was a dumb thing to say who ever said that... but don't point ignorance at Mac users... look at it this way. 97-98% PC how many of them do you think bought from dell or compac or anyother big corp...90%. those 90% are only just as careless about prices and that, as those who buy straight from Apple.com.
| Quote : MAC users know only of what Apple gives them! |
what the heck is that supposed to mean... you make it sound like Mac users are are blind or something. PC users if anything are the ones that are blind... think about it.
97% use PC. of them how many do you thnk KNOW any other program then the one they sit infront of at work 9-5. I couldn't tell you how many people i know that only know how to access the 1 or 2 programs they use.
Mac users as there are only 2-3% need to know the prorams they have been forced to use do to its neash but they need to know other programs that every one else is on too...so if anything they NEED and DO know more.
they are in the same boat however... there are just ALOT more ignorant PC users... so don't be insulting Mac users because they are not the ones who choose their work environment.
you might also stop and think that a PC user is likly to never be a MAc user too... but a Mac user will use both...yes in part because they have to sometimes for the programs, and sure becasue its cheaper. However you'll notice that they STAY a mac and PC user.
SOOOO Mac users would likly be more educated all around then your average PC user.
don't forget, Pepale in this forum are NOT average PC users.

LOL, I was actually kidding.
As a user of both, I know what is in and what's not, and trust me, when I said that, although a joke, my intention was to point out, a Mac user will rarely ever change the hardware his Mac came with, such as the one-button mouse. Which is what I was saying to Silverpig who pointed out about 4-button mice.

That brings back memories of stabbing a Mac mouse with a soldering iron. Ahhh....

ok well i can't realy argue with you on the mouse thing... only know of only a couple poeple who have opted for a more then one button mouse on the Mac, IF i owned one i Know i sure would....besid the point though...people just don't think to get a better mouse. (exept of course the GOD awful PUCK's that came with the older iMac's im sure many poeple that had that piece od shyte changed the mouse)
but as for changing the hard where... you are in part right. they usually only add more ram...Bought from thier local PC shop.
but as for changing anytihng else... what would you have them change or add? they do pretty much come with everything that would be needed...don't they?

I dunno, CPU maybe?
Our workstations at school use a whopping 640MB of RAM yet they are still sluggish in PS7. I dunno how much minimum a Mac needs, my guess is 256MB, but to me it seems the problem lies not in memory usage. Too often people using Macs open one or two programs at a time maximum. I don't feel the OS X interface to be that well designed for multitasking, that I can assure you. It's kinda confusing.
I guess for rendering and video more RAM would be needed. But at the very least improve that goddamned CPU!

yes the CPU can definatly use some major improvements in the speed department(hz). if they could get to the same hz as intel or amd, they'd be laughing.
But upgrading a CPU isn't usually an upgrade thing to do...(even though you can) gerenally people keep their machine so long that they would need to change the MoBo to ge the new CPU, then that means new ram ususlly these days too. the only thiung you got left.... is a old Graphics card that while one is at it should be upgraded. the only thing left is you HD, which would likly be full.
Might as well buy a new machine and be done with it.
So again, What AND Why does a Mac user need to upgrade?...
and now that most PC's come with everything now too. what will the PC user need to upgrade, by the time they'd what to?
do you get what im getting at?

I do.
I don't know of many MAC users who upgrade, but the PC world is different. I know many people who know jack on comps but still upgraded RAM or other things.

what other things though... thats what im asking... Rams yes... but what else?
ASUS P4S8X - P4 2.4B - 2 x 512M DDR333 - ATI 9500 Pro(Sapphire) - WD 80G HD (8M Buffer) - SAMSUNG SV0844D 8G HD - LG 16X DVD - Yamaha F1 CDRW - Iomega Zip 250 int.
Hard drive, vid card, sound card... all those pieces are easily upgradable. Apple has finally come around and decided they aren't the only ones capable of manufacturing hardware for their PCs. (ATi manufactures video cards for them as an example). It's a decision Apple should have made years ago when IBM first licensed their architecture to 3rd party manufacturers.
If you design software that is fool-proof, only a fool will want to use it.
well i only realy started Useing Macs since the G3, and as far as i have seen... those who use or own the G3's or G4's upgrade just like everyone else on PC's
hey i need more disk space. maybe i should buy a new computer... this is not their mantality. They go buy a new HD just like PC users.
Vid cards... well when you buy a MAc you usually get one of the best Vid cards on the market at the time... that gives you a few years of good use before considering buyiong a new one. a few years these days is a long time. and buying a vid card for an older machine like say a G3 333 would be just silly. and i think they were only PCI any how one the G3 towers... could be wrong there.
Audio...not too many people 'I' would bother. as i'm in the design (visual) community so they wouldn't bother...
but since MAC is well know for its Music editing i would say that those using a Mac for such eather Do upgrade or already have.
So agian. Mac users... those who 'USE' Macs do upgrade what they need to just as PC users do.
in regards to RAM, Hard Drives, Audio, and i guess haven't ever realy need to with the vidio.
as for apple licensing there architecture... I know this they should have. and they are kicking them selfs now.
...just wondering... what is IBM's Market share?

I would say MacOS9 is generally a crap OS. It has historically been more stable than windows because it doesn't really run more than one thing at a time.
Windows tries to do this but doesn't do it very well. OS X is pretty good though. Well its pretty much a modified BSD with Aqua on top. So it is stable and excellent at multitasking. The memory handling is way better than 9.
But I'm mainly a PC user. And I prefer to use Linux. I have to use Win2000/XP cos I'm a VC++ developer. but all my web stuff is on my linux box.
Even though the hardware is different, the OS remains the main difference from a users perspective. Apple now have the better OS than the majority of PC users i.e. MSWin.
Hardware wise the G5 is pretty good. But How will it hold up against the AMD-64?
The other thing is Macs rely on a (putting flame retardant suit on) cult following. These users will never leave apple no matter what. Some of them still can't come to terms with and still deny that Microsoft 0wnZ Apple. Well... part of it anyway. There are also the Media workers, who would say "Apple Computers have served us well in the past".
If someone who's not very literate with computers just wants a computer for general use (Office etc.), I would recommend a mac running at least OS 10.2 with Thinkfree or OpenOffice. Also for Video work too, Final Cut Express for normal stuff, Pro for more advanced stuff.
If you want games or something, its definitely gotta be a PC with WinXP. If you're more computer literate, and just want office, web, email etc. or even some graphics work then I'd say get yourself a PC and a copy of Linux.

I find the OS X bad for multitasking man. Most of the time it's hard to manage. And boy, when that OS crashes, is it ever so bad on your work!
As for better than Windows, that's VERY relative. OS X is very cool, but far from being something I'd use at home over WinXP.

Apple are sly about that. Only the Kernel is open I think. Everything else is proprietary.
They're a buncho bastards. Use Linux, its better.

Freedom from the chains of some of the corporations that are allowed by our so-called governments to rule our lives.
Beyond that when set-up correctly, Linux does not crash. It is more more secure than Windows. (I know it isn't in its default state). It is far less prone to viruses. It is far more powerful in what it allows you to do. It is quicker. On my system built mainly on core linux, there is less then 10 seconds between the BIOS POST and the command line Password prompt. If GUI is on, then its a further 10 to 15 seconds.
General GUI operations also seem lighter. There are so many options on the GUI you can have, and I don't mean different themes as offered by Windows.
Linux is superior to Windows in every aspect ideologically and technically except general games support.
I can't think of anything else of the top of my head.

They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.
Unfortunately I don't. I recall it was talked about, that some firm tried an Athlon on a Mac OS, and it ran even faster.

Commandline only operations and ability to direct edit any and all relevent files including source if need be. Ability to only install the portions I directly need. It's optimized for my specific hardware and doesn't have unneeded drivers slowing it down. Enlightenment, blackbox, sawfish, and eterms!
I'd say xwindows but that's a mixed blessing...
I run gentoo which is very nice, it actually is a source distribution that compiles (after you modify a few config files) for the specific type of hardware you are running on each and every package on the machine... its unbelieveably fast and in the end that's the selling point... if they made mmporpg's for linux, I wouldn't own a ms product.
