Network wise, there are no differences. Both require a router and more than one network. The cost could be the same or higher when subnetting because more than one switch is required instead of creating VLANs on a single switch. What are you trying to achieve and how many computers on your network?

vLANs are used to break up broadcast domains and also apply ACL rules on how each vLAN can talk to another vLAN. Very similar to routers

Subnets are used for routing.

Both overlap a bit, but are not the same.

A vLAN is used to emulate a router interconnecting different switches without requiring a separate router or separate switches.
