HP Monitor issues

Hello,
I just bought a new HP Pavillion P7 series computer with the HP S2031 monitor (widescreen LCD). I could not get the recolution to change away from 640x480 until I created a new driver using PowerStrip (thanks to another existing forum on this site!).
Finally I was able to change the resolution to something useable.
Now though, when I attempted to change the resolution closer to the factory recommendation of 1600x900 (which doesn't exist using the new driver) I am getting an Input Signal out of range. Then I tried to launch a game for my kids and I got the same thing, except there was no way to get back to a "normal" screen resolution and I had to force a shutdown.

I already took one monitor back since HP support claimed that must be the issue. This second one is doing the exact same thing as the first. So I am wondering if it could be the graphics card?
I have updated every driver I can think of and they all say they are up to date.

I am running Windows 7, 64 bit factory installed.

Any ideas???
