I am trying to format the hard disk but it is asking to install the drivers

Download a copy of Killdisk, burn a bootable CD with it, boot your system from that CD, run the one-pass erase function and your HDD should be as good as new. Make sure you erase the correct HDD.
After that you can re-format it however you like.
