I need help connecting my eternal hard drive

Hello, I bought a new HP desktop and had some trouble. I was told to remove everything and start over...I did what they said but forgot that my external hard drive was connected. Now my HD does not show up anywhere. It lights up, it makes the little noise...but I cant find it. i've done some of the checks that were listed. But nothing. Did I wreck the HD, or does it need to be loaded up again. I did not set it up in the first place to do not have any idea how to do this.

The first thing to try is to connect it to conenct it to a different USB port, sometimes usb devices that crashed are frozen on that usb port. did you restart your computer? also try another computer that might help.
