I'm doing a fresh install of Windows 7 64 bit on a new OCZ Vertex 2 Series 60GB 2.5" SATA II SSD (OCZSSD2-2VTXE60G). My motherboard is GA-P55-UD3R rev 1.

There is a sticky on the OCZ forum recommending to install the Intel RST chipset driver for ACHI mode rather than using the embedded Microsoft driver.

In the same thread, some people recommended using the preinstall drivers. When I try this, it shows "Intel(R) 5 Series/3400 Series SATA AHCI Controller" as the only driver compatible with my hardware. However, this does not match the manual, which says to use the "ICH8R/ICH9R/ICH10R..." (or something like that).

Which driver is the correct one for ACHI mode for my motherboard? I'm guessing "Intel(R) ICH10R SATA AHCI Controller".

Note: In the same thread, it's mentioned that there's a workaround in the SSD firmware 1.10+ for the embedded Microsoft driver bug. Since it's still a sticky, I assume they're still recommending to use the Intel RST drivers.

With the latest (and greatest, as they both can correctly pass-through TRIM, and will do it for any single SSD, even if a RAID set is configured on the controller) I've only seen the "Intel(R) 5 Series/3400 Series SATA AHCI Controller" nomenclature - that is the correct one, as it includes the P55 and PM55 Express platform control hubs, as well as the 3400 and 3420... I can only surmise, as PCH is appended to the ICH8/9/10 naming in the original drivers shown in the manual, that the earlier drivers were more consolidated, and less specific.

The DiskName strings in the current (9.6.0.1014) AHCI driver set:
Quote:
[Strings]
;Localizable
DiskName = "Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver"
*PNP0600.DeviceDesc = "Intel AHCI Controller"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2681&CC_0106.DeviceDesc = "Intel(R) ESB2 SATA AHCI Controller"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27C1&CC_0106.DeviceDesc = "Intel(R) ICH7R/DH SATA AHCI Controller"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27C5&CC_0106.DeviceDesc = "Intel(R) ICH7M/MDH SATA AHCI Controller"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2821&CC_0106.DeviceDesc = "Intel(R) ICH8R/DH/DO SATA AHCI Controller"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2829&CC_0106.DeviceDesc = "Intel(R) ICH8M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2922&CC_0106.DeviceDesc = "Intel(R) ICH9R/DO/DH SATA AHCI Controller"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2929&CC_0106.DeviceDesc = "Intel(R) ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3A02&CC_0106.DeviceDesc = "Intel(R) ICH10D/DO SATA AHCI Controller"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3A22&CC_0106.DeviceDesc = "Intel(R) ICH10R SATA AHCI Controller"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3B29&CC_0106.DeviceDesc = "Intel(R) 5 Series 4 Port SATA AHCI Controller"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3B2F&CC_0106.DeviceDesc = "Intel(R) 5 Series 6 Port SATA AHCI Controller"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3B22&CC_0106.DeviceDesc = "Intel(R) 5 Series/3400 Series SATA AHCI Controller"

and in the 8.9.0.1023 (semi-broken) set:
Quote:
[Strings]
;Localizable
DiskName = "Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver"
*PNP0600.DeviceDesc = "Intel AHCI Controller"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2681&CC_0106.DeviceDesc = "Intel(R) ESB2 SATA AHCI Controller"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27C1&CC_0106.DeviceDesc = "Intel(R) ICH7R/DH SATA AHCI Controller"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27C5&CC_0106.DeviceDesc = "Intel(R) ICH7M/MDH SATA AHCI Controller"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2821&CC_0106.DeviceDesc = "Intel(R) ICH8R/DH/DO SATA AHCI Controller"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2829&CC_0106.DeviceDesc = "Intel(R) ICH8M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2922&CC_0106.DeviceDesc = "Intel(R) ICH9R/DO/DH SATA AHCI Controller"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2929&CC_0106.DeviceDesc = "Intel(R) ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3A02&CC_0106.DeviceDesc = "Intel(R) ICH10D/DO SATA AHCI Controller"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3A22&CC_0106.DeviceDesc = "Intel(R) ICH10R SATA AHCI Controller"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3B29&CC_0106.DeviceDesc = "Intel(R) PCHM SATA AHCI Controller 4 Port"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3B2F&CC_0106.DeviceDesc = "Intel(R) PCHM SATA AHCI Controller 6 Port"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3B22&CC_0106.DeviceDesc = "Intel(R) PCH SATA AHCI Controller"

which, I think, means their manual pictures either had to be prior to that rev, or they used a 'generic' picture from a different MOBO to crib that entire manual section....

Great, thanks for your help. I installed the "Intel(R) 5 Series/3400 Series SATA AHCI Controller" drivers and it appears to be working as expected.
