Rendering does not use the video card, it is CPU bound only. The actual need for a higher end or lower end card will be determined by your models as the card will effect rotating, panning/redraw speed, but for rendering you need a fast CPU (or multiple PC's as you can network render with 3DS Max (only one license required).
