Hp 3970 scanner problem

Dell Latitude Pentium 4 laptop's hard drive crashed. Nephew installed a new hard drive and it uses Windows XP too. Downloaded HP Photo & Imaging and HP Director from www.download.com. Can't get HP 3970 Scanjet scanner to scan when I push button on scanner or try to scan from HP Photo & imaging. It worked on my desktop computer but the power supply went out on it and I switched over to the laptop. I heard that there is a compatibility problem with Windows XP and HP 3970? There wasn't with my desktop computer! Don't recall ever using the Latitude to scan before nephew installed new hard drive or since? So now what? Thank you.

Try downloading and installing the drivers from the HP website- they have XP listed as a supported OS, and provide driver downloads.
