Harddrive not showing files

yesterday when i got onto my computer, all that showed up was internet explorer and the recycle bin. Everything was empty. today, i looked up on some thread that told me to go to my C:// files and make sure all the files aren't "hidden." I did this and two of my programs came back on my desktop and most of the programs went back to my program list. However, when i went to open the programs, most of them showed up as empty. Can anyone offer some advice?

Had a similar problem over the weekend. See my post, maybe it will help. Tried lots of things.
