Forum Systems : New Build 1st build, how'm I looking?

Hi guys n Gals, longtime reader, first time poster,
I use my pc for playing WoW, checking Emails and maybe watching films occasionally,
Now,my old pc didnt want to play world of warcraft anymore so I decided to build a system that hopefully would do the job and last a while, ended up buying:

AsRock m3a770de mobo, with an athlon 11x3 435 triple-core processor already glued in, 2.9Ghz per core, leave as is, overclock three or try unlocking fourth core? research shows not all fourth cores are stable I understand,
got 2Gb of ddr3 1333 coming, I want more but funds Meh........,
Twintech graphics card using nvidia 9500gt gear, onboard fan/cooler,
Zalman Dual fan ram-cooler,
160Gb Sata
700w psu, came in a galaxy tower, side panel of case has 80mm fan, added 120mm exhaust to rear and a slotfan under the graphics card slot, thinking of adding 2x 40mm draggers at front of case, but that'll require some chopping out and moving power switch higher up the case,
so far, about £320 in UK paper,
keyboard/mouse B.C.L. £10 from local shop, had original for 8 years,thought I'd treat myself
O/s probably Xp Pro, only 32 Bit but I hear WoW is only 32 Bit game so it wouldnt benefit from 64bit O/s,
using a workabout cd drive for installs etc, then it goes back in the drawer till needed
More ram as I can afford it, I.E. other half allows the fundage :P,
I dont want a load of posts advertising x,y,z from Mental corporation, if I had mega funds, I'd have gone and bought a highend pre-made,
just a gentle, how did I do?
Thanks

Apologies, as I said I'm new and ofc I didnt read stickies before posting *slaps own wrist*
P.C. is bought and built (mostly, just Ram to arrive) already, I just wanted a pat on the back, or pointing in a better direction, Thanks,
Moto

that video card is a little on the weak side, it will let you play WOW, but on lower settings.

other than that, you should be all set.

Reply to jonpaul37

I was down to two frames per second on my old (nvidia 6200 le) set up, tried the new card in my old set up and it gave me 60 fps straight off, so I'm thinking its a good start from where I was lol, Ty for the look over J.P.

While WoW may not be a 64 bit OS, it wouldn't hurt it run in one, and the way things are going now most things are moving to 64 bit. If you don't have the OS yet I strongly suggest Win7 64. If you do have the OS, then don't worry about it. Just know that you won't be able to use more that 3GB (and change) of RAM. Other than that, it doesn't look like a bad budget build. Like jonpaul said you GPU isn't the greatest, but if it runs WoW the way you want it then you're set.

Have fun!

Reply to mavanhel

Thanks for the input Mavanhel, as I said, the straight off fps was massively improved, this is ofc without the new processor and mobo combination, I just stuck the new card in my old MSI K9N6 PGM 2 V board, sorted drivers out and saw the boost, I'm confident (well, as much as I can ever be) that the new mobo and chip are going to add to the grin factor, I would like to get a shiny gfx card but the Gf is a little miffed I've spent what I have, so that would be a ways away I think, and if everythings working ok, I' probably add another 2Gb of ram first before buying another card.
on the plus side, my first 2Gb of ocz is on its way according to the guy I bought it from, so fingers crossed, may be firing up by thursday :)
I'll keep you posted and thanks once again for your advice guys

Reply to motopsychojdn

Yay, Wednesday morning, finished my nightshift and my 2Gb of ram and slot fan arrive, few headscratches (Lan not active till i put the Mobo driver disc in) but took about half hour to get up and running, drivers installed/updated, windows Xp pro installed and online, pulled my backup from ext drive for pics music etc oh I got to say AsRock? loving that instant boot thing, 2 seconds and I'm on my desktop, Awesome, I'm maybe a bit cocky here but I'm thinking I've done ok for under 350 quid, WoW is running at eleven on all knobs quite cheerfully, Job done hehe, not tried the Asrock overclocking thing (acc/occ?) or unlocking the fourth core yet, but I dont think I'll have to tbh, all in all, I seem to have built a reasonably performing pc and as its my first effort I am quite chuffed :P, also a plus, mate who's buying my old pc after its reconned gave me a xp coa, and it had a Pb R1935 lappy attached to it, so I'm stripping that for ebay to make a few quid back, bonus.
only problem now is, once the gf see's it running, She'll probably want one lol.

If WoW is the max ull go then 9500gt is fine. If you gonna get to like MW2....GTA4....and so on ull need 9600gt or higher

Aaah, sunday night, i've been playing around with acc and athlon overdrive, got to 3.2Ghz stable, then thought I'd try the old, 'can I unlock 4th core or not' game, short answer? yes I can, and did, I dont have a 435 triple, I have a Phenom II x4 B35 Quadcore, on deneb so I can also enable L3 if I'm not much mistaken?, then O/c it into bigger numbers, I feel so lucky and happy,
I'm almost ashamed its only ever going to play WoW, which reminds me, I installed Deadspace as the gf had bought it a while back, ol system couldnt handle it, this one does no problem, that was b4 unlocking as well.
<< happy bunny with the build :P

Reply to motopsychojdn

Ok, I was happy with the build, then I saw a thread on here and got so jealous I just had to do something with my cables, so Heres the final effort

I dont have any drives in the case I know, I have everything I need on the Hdd I.E. Wow :P

http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q172/Motopsychojdn/usbsata.jpg
U.S.B.,Power switch etc is fed behind mobo and threaded through a hole in the back

and the one you dont usually see...
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q172/Motopsychojdn/Darkside.jpg
not as tidy out back, but it keeps it tidy and unseen from the front

check out this guys thread as well for more cable-based fun :) http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/foru [...] 13_50.html

The Molex hanging down by the psu is for the side panel fan, its unseen once thats on

Shiny, but I think I need more fans...............:P

Reply to motopsychojdn

Took half the top drive cage out recently and sprayed it all Matt Black took lightbars off front, the leds will go somewhere in future, just not as bars and not atm
Mmmmm, more fans :)
Added:
2x 80mm at front
H.DD. cooler, 2x40mm
4x 80mm in the roof
swapped 80mm in side panel for a 120mm
made a template to sit over the 75mm? cpu fan, and superglued another 80mm onto that :)
and thinking now about putting a 40mm fan on each of the north and southbridges,
Had I mentioned I like fans?

Reply to motopsychojdn

ok, getting bad now, I have another GalaxyIII case coming as I wasnt happy with how I'd drilled holes for the four fans in roof, bit close to the psu for my liking an I want to mve the powerswitch and and and :P, I'll post some pics of prepping/planning work once I get started on it.

NeverBloodyending this modifying lark........................ :

Right, case came, started planning the next rebuild, I wanted to hide the cables more
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q172/Motopsychojdn/main.jpg

I mean it was ok, but I wasnt happy so heres a few pics of the process, feel free to ask, criticise, mock or admire as you see fit :)

see those lightbars at the front of the pc? remember those......

http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q172/Motopsychojdn/on.jpg

Aaah, that new case smell :)
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q172/Motopsychojdn/pc%20of%20doom%20build/barecase.jpg

I made a jig for the roof fans this time, marked 2 fans side by side and cut the jig to just fit inside the roof section so it could slide as needed.

http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q172/Motopsychojdn/pc%20of%20doom%20build/fanonjig.jpg

like this,
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q172/Motopsychojdn/pc%20of%20doom%20build/jiginroof.jpg

Four fans, nice and evenly mounted.
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q172/Motopsychojdn/pc%20of%20doom%20build/fansinplace.jpg

while the roof was off, I sprayed the case Matt Black, and drilled/cut any holes I needed, behind the motherboard 20+4 socket and in the floor for the powerswitch to feed through as thats moved to the back of the rig, under the pci slots,
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q172/Motopsychojdn/pc%20of%20doom%20build/paintedcase.jpg
Remember those lightbars? well I had 2 sets of 2 now so I cut up some blanking plates and mounted them kinda equally to run the length inside the case, just in front of the mobo,
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q172/Motopsychojdn/pc%20of%20doom%20build/lightbar.jpg

Another blanking plate made up the top section of the box to cover the wires more and stop excess light bleeding out
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q172/Motopsychojdn/pc%20of%20doom%20build/lightbarbox.jpg

And a quick test to check they fit/work,
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q172/Motopsychojdn/pc%20of%20doom%20build/lightbaron.jpg

after all that, A simple *Pfft!* case of fitting everything to new case, wiring it all up, and trying to stop myself from improve it anymore, I give myself a week before I start thinking, 'Hey what if I.......' lol
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums [...] nished.jpg

this project was carried out with the assistance of Carling lager, and my Girlfriend (as in she didnt interrupt much) and our three cats, let me know what you think and anything you think I could do better in future :)

you are very welcome!!
but sometimes (like in this case) its not overkill if you go for extreme windspeeds exceeding hurricane force :P
lol but anyway i really liked the casemod you did keep it up!

Is that a Gigabyte case?...I had a case from Gigabyte that looked almost the same minus the side panel which was an X, I loved that case had to upgrade though as I needed some heavy airflow. I like the modding you done too it looks fantastic, going start on my own mod of a case like this

Its a Galaxy III case off Egay, not sure of manufacturer tbh, but had 2 now and their not bad, I'll be putting another 2x 120mm's in the side panel to help cool the 5770 soon so its changing again :P
Good luck on your own case mod hope it goes well :)
if you have any questions feel free to pm me and I'll help if i can.

Stuck another Hd in there for my 64bit O/s
Knackered two of my roof fans somehow, I was swapping them to intakes but Meh, I'll cut something out and put a 120 in there when I have time
and rewired a few bits, fans are all off one line now and Hdd's on a seperate line
graphics card on the psu's dedicated wire threaded though the ram cooler subtly
light bar back in now and a spare led off that is lighting the space between Hdd's
Waiting on an acrylic sheet for the new window mod, swapping from 1x80mm to three 120's, I've cut the metal bits out of a spare frame so it'll just be a square frame with the new window, no swirly bits or the ring in the middle :)
some pics as it is now:

Sorry bout the blurriness, but this is to show the led between the drives
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q172/Motopsychojdn/pc%20of%20doom%20build/04072010281.jpg

you can see the lead for the 5770 here, but its almost invisible from a straight on view
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q172/Motopsychojdn/pc%20of%20doom%20build/04072010282.jpg

The power lines for the 4 pin cpu and the rear exhaust fan are both fed through a hole and pushed back as far as possible.
