Hi guys.
I have been reading many reviews and posts over the past month or so
and I am struggling to pick a laptop for my needs – there are so many
to choose from!
Below I have listed my needs for the laptop, and also a configuration.
If I could get some opinions it would be great.
1. BUDGET
£800 to £1200 (inc VAT) … don't really wanna go over that price …
although I am claiming it as an expense for work.
2. LAPTOP USE
I am going to use the laptop mainly for programming. I will be using
SQL Server 200, VB 6.0, VSS, Photoshop, Fireworks, ASP, .Net and
possibly installing Oracle. I will also be using day to day MS Office
applications. I don't play games, but will be using the internet a lot
(downloading software and MP3's). I also require a TV out so I can
watch DVD's from the laptop to TV. I will be caring the laptop to and
from work (bus / tube) each day, however do not think I will be
running the laptop on battery much at all.
3. IDEAL CONFIG
- Processor: Many different reviews and processors available by the
sounds of it. I am assuming the majority of you will agree with the
Pentium M?
- RAM: Going to need 512 or 1024mb
- HD: 60Gb +
- DVD RW (I guess I should get the DVD RW as I am sure I can start
buring photos and development work onto the DVD cd's rather than CDR)
- 15"+ screen
- Video card so that we can watch DVD's on the TV
- A couple of USB ports (connect digital camera and USB CF card
reader)
4. WHAT HAVE I LOOKED AT?
I've read a heap of reviews and heard different opinions from people.
I have pretty much made up my mind that I would like to purchase
either (no particular order):
- Sony Vaio
- IBM Thinkpad
- Dell Latitude
A friend of mine has a Sony Vaio PCG-FR315b at home currently and
never had a problem. Although it is a Celeron and I think my
requirements won't fit this one.
5. YOUR OPIONS
Would love to hear some suggestions from the guru's in this field. If
you need to know more please reply to the post.

Give up the requirements for watching DVDs played on the laptop on your TV
and just buy a home DVD player; they're cheap as dirt any more, and you
don't need to waste an expensive laptop on that kind of thing.

Your going to get your best performance out of an A64. The only drawback to
an A64 is the fact they are power hungry. Since you said you will not be
using on battery often at all, this will not be an issue for you though.
