How do I enable virtualization for an ACER 5517-5136. I have searched many places and even called ACER, who want $50.00 to assist in enabling VT. Please help.

I have an ACER Aspire 5517-5136 w/an Athlon 64 TF-20 1.6GHz Processor. Numerous programs I had run tells me I am capable of Vitualization. Unfortunately I can not turn it on at the bios. I called ACER concerning the matter, and they will tell me how and walk me through it for a fee of $50 - $100. The machine is capable of virtualization. I don't want to spend the money if I do not have to.

Thank for your reply

A few days ago I bought an acer aspire 5517 to run Ubuntu 9.10.

I'm not sure but I believe that the 'svm' entry below indicates that the AMD Athlon TF-20 supports virtualization:

Last night I installed VirtualBox 3.1.6 r59338 to check out the current Ubuntu 10.04 daily build .iso.

The Hardware Virtualization options in VB were enabled by default.

I went to the line and read the overview of the cpu and it does sup[port virtualization. Iam still looking for a way to turn it on. ACER BIOS will will allow turn on, but acer technicians will for a fee assist me in turning it on.

Hi alex66.

The 5517 (which as I noted above, appears to support hardware virtualization under *Ubuntu 9.10) I bought last month uses BIOS ver. 1.09 (2009/12/14)

Which BIOS version (and for that matter which wi-fi card: Atheros or Broadcom?) does your 5517-5136 have?

*I installed Ubuntu 10.04 last night and here is the cpu portion of the lshw Terminal output:
