I havea 5.25 sata to usb adapter, can i use it on sata laptop drives?

You must use the power cable to provide power to a laptop drive, just like a desktop drive.

Also, some laptop drives have a custom adapter attached which must be removed to expose the standard SATA data and power connectors.

The 2.5" and 3.5" SATA drives use the same data and power cable form factors. If you can plug a 3.5" drive in, you can plug a 2.5" drive in. So do 5 1/4" drives. But the power connectors are generally separate from the data cables. Like Phil said, you will ned to get power from somewhere.
