Hello,
First of all, im Dutch, so if there are some spellingmistakes, please dont kill me for that :)

I have recently bought a new videocard at the local store: An ASUS nVidia GT220.. And I am aloud to try it out till saturday. If im not satisfied, I can bring it back till then. At that same store I also saw a nVidia GTS250, but im not sure if my PC can handle that one or if its much better than the GT220.. The price of this videocard is €50 (35pounds) more.

My Specs:
Packard Bell iMedia D2450
2gb RAM
Intel Pentium E2200
nVidia GT220
19" Monitor,.

Im sure I need a new powersupply for the GTS250. Ive now got 250watts max and thats not enough,. I saw one there with 450watts for €25 (around 15 pounds)..

I play games like CoD4/MW2, Far Cry 2, MoHA and that stuff.. My max. Resolution on this monitor is 1440x900. With the GT220 I play CoD4 on that resolution with @40fps, but some big maps just 20fps and thats not enough..

My question is: Can my PC handle the GTS250 and is it worth the €50 extra??

Tnx!
Stefan

Is it worth it? YES, it sounds like you are an avid gamer and you want something that will give you enjoyment.

Will you need a new PSU? Absolutely. We will need the specific on teh 450W that you mentioned. If it is not a higher quality unit I would not suggest it. There are alot of crappy low wattage PSU's out there and you don't want to have issues running that card. You will need a PCI-E power connector and I beleive the requirements are 450W and 24A. You can find this out my looking at the 12V rails and checking the Amp rating. If it has more than one rail there should be a total 12V wattage, divide by 12V to get your Amp rating. For example, if it has 2 17A rails and are 360W total, divide by 12V would equal 30A. (360/12=30)

Ok tnx alot!
But isnt the processor a big problem? Can I get the maximum outta that card with just a good PSU?

Stefan

Btw,. Does it also make much more sound than the GT220?

The E2200 isn't much of a help but going from the GT220 to a 250 should yield a world of improvement itself.
The blunt of the noise is going to be dependent upon the size of the fan on the 250 (vs. the 220). Bigger fans *usually have less of a whinny high pitched sound.

its super worth it. GT220 suck balls. GTS 250 is good.
The GT220 is a nice card, it's just not intended for gaming.

OH AND BTW! Watch your mouth young man!

If you want to game it is worth it to spend as much as you can on a graphic card. This has the most direct impact on your gaming performance.

This Corsair 450vx would be a excellent power supply for £54.69 (up to 87% efficiency

OCZ Stealth Xtream 500W PSU --£47 (up to 83%)

Also, how much is the GTS 250? You might be able to find better deals.

Above the GTS 250 in power there is a 5750 for £104.18 or a 5770 for £116.47

Tnx! Im convinced :p

Saturday im gonna swap it, Just not sure about the PSU.. The one I saw there was 450 watt, but its €25 (£15).. So I think its not that great.
Im gonna print the "minumum requirements" for the PSU that is needed and then compare different PSUs at that shop!

Tnx :)

But remember that brand is important! And heavier units are usually better...

Good idea. You never know if they really know what they are talking about. But usually if you have specs they can help you much better.

Yes, but do all gts250 have the same PSU requirements? For example im going to buy the ASUS ENGTS250 and doesnt that need more PSU power than the XFX or Gigbatyte?

Requirments I believe are 450watts and 24a, is this also for the ASUS one?

Yes.

For the most part. They are really just system requirements. That 450W PSU has to run your whole system, not just the video card. So there is usually some room to play. If you have a low power CPU you can usually get away with more. But if you have an OCed i7 with a raid array of 8 Hard drives, 450W is NEVER going to cut it. Some manufactures may suggest higher requirements, but they are usually pretty similar. 450W and 24A is a safe bet in my opinion, I would stick with those as long as the rest of your system is average, which it is.

Ok tnx :)
Tommorow ill have a look and ill post the result here..

Actually all I have to pay attention to is if its got more than 450watts, 24a, size and if the 12v get most watts.. O and ofcourse if it got a PCI-e power connecter.

Efficieny should be as high as possible I assume? Atleast above 80% I guess..

Yeah I would get an 80 Plus rated supply. below are the different levels of 80 Plus requirements:

80 Plus Certification Requirements
20% Load (Light) 50% Load (Typical) 100% Load (Full)
80 Plus Standard 80% 80% 80%
80 Plus Bronze 82% 85% 82%
80 Plus Silver 85% 88% 85%
80 Plus Gold 87% 90% 87%
80 Plus Platinum (230VAC only) 90% 94% 91%

Yea, I bought it today and its in my pc now :) like SV_bubble said it makes a lower noice.. I really love this videocard, I play heavy games (CoD4, MoHA) at highest resolution (1440x900) with average 80fps :), sometimes even get above the 100..

I also bought a new PSU with 420 Watts.. It costed 15 pounds and its a big jump foreward compared to my old one (250watts). Got no idea whats its called. In the local shop theyve put everything in and it works :D the only problem was the size of the videocard, it bumped on a harddisk cable but with some extension cables it just fitted.

Im realllyyyy happy and im sure it can play new games like CoD MW2 and Farcry 2 aswell :D
