I have a Toshiba Tecra 8000 laptop. Can someone tell me how to open the
case? I'm interested in adding memory and a bigger HD but I have to get
inside first.

Memory should be relatively easy. There should be a sliding panel
(some models have it secured with a screw) on the bottom. Remove
that, and you can click in a SODIMM module of appropriate type.
The hard drive is considerably harder, as you actually would have to
do a fair bit of disassemblly to swap that out. It's not something
you want to do without help if you've never done it before.

Are you sure? Usually, both of those functions can be accomplished
without actually opening the case. And, in fact, that is the case --
for both the hard drive and memory -- on the Tecra 8000.

The "fair bit of disassembly" is what I'd like a hint at how to start. A
friend and I got his laptop disassembled awhile back. As best I recall,
there was some way the keyboard lifted out to get to the inside. It has
been awhile, so I don't recall exactly how we did it, or if the Toshiba
would work the same way. If you can help me get started, I will take
responsibility for whatever happens after that!!

No disassembly is required to remove the hard drive of a Tecr 8000. You
remove one single screw and a cover panel comes off, then the hard drive
slides out. It's not necessary to take the laptop apart. Memory is a
panel on the bottom opened with one or two screws.
