Adding a SATA HD

Last response: in Storage

I want to add a SATA HD to my IBM Thinkcentre MT-M 8171 running XP,
but I want to continue booting from the original IDE drive.
BIOS is enabled for both types of drive, but I can only boot from the add-on SATA.
The SATA drive appears in the BIOS boot sequence menu as "IDE 2". The only other options are floppy and LAN. How can I boot from my original IDE when it is no longer recognized?

The IDE drive is set as master? If you disconnect the SATA drive does the IDE show up? If not check the connections to it!

Without the SATA drive connected the ST Barracuda boots normally.
It is jumpered at cable select, and has a CD drive as its slave.

And it does not show up in BIOS with the SATA drive connected! That is very strange that you do not have it in the boot order in BIOS, only thing I can think of trying is resetting BIOS with both drives connected.

I reset my BIOS to all default values and restarted with only the native IDE drive present.
The drives were listed as
1 A:
4 IDE 0 Seagate
7 PCI LAN

Booted normally. Then shut down and plugged in the SATA drive and saw the drives listed as
1 A:
4 IDE 0 Samsung [actually the SATA drive on the SATA cables]
5 IDE 2 Seagate
7 PCI LAN

So I selected IDE 2 Seagate and it tried to start but Windows shut it down to protect my system.
Tried restarting in Safe Mode but still no go.

So I went back to only the original IDE Seagate but with it jumpered as Master On /Slave off. It booted normally, no problem. Then I added the SATA drive, chose the IDE Seagate boot option and again
Windows stopped the procedure.
Maybe this old IBM is just not completely SATA-friendly?

I found a Lenovo support website,
http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/thinkcen...

that might allow me to flash my BIOS to fix the problem. My old BIOS has
EEPROM 2BKT45AUS and a date of July 2005. The update note says:

Flash BIOS update - Flash from Operating System version
for ThinkCentre(R) 8171, etc...
Version 2BKT52A includes previous updates, including:
2BKT39A/2BJT39A
- Fixes a problem where the system does not detect some Serial ATA
(SATA) drives when plugged into SATA3 or SATA4 ports.

Maybe this is what I need but the process is tricky. What do you think?
