http://www.ati.com/products/mobili [...] play.html. This ATI
Mobility Radeon summary indicates that the new adapters have (the
expression "could have" is used here, so it might be OEM selective)
support for SXGA (1280x1024), SXGA+ (1400x1050), UXGA (1600x1200), QXGA
(2048x1536). This ATI page is replete with conditionals so it is
probable that much of the claimed capability is what the OEM wants to
pay for when licensing the adapter.

Ok Quaoar,
many thanks for your response.
I'm going to delve into on the forum you mention.

Sony has 3 video configurations of this laptop:
13.3" WXGA TFT with ATI Mobility RADEON 9700 Graphic Chipset, with XBRITE
13.3" WXGA TFT with ATI Mobility RADEON 9200 Graphics Chipset, with XBRITE
13.3" WXGA TFT with ATI Mobility RADEON 9200 Graphics Chipset
the high-end model with the ATI 9700 has 64 MB VRAM, the ATI 9200 has 32 MB
VRAM. I would bet that the one with the ATI 9700 does considerably better
than 1200 X 800 on the external monitor. But, Sony doesn't list the max
resolution on the video-out (at least I couldn't find it), because they have
some proprietary software to configure the output to your montior. That's
probably a good thing because of the wide-screen aspect ratio. By the way,
have seen a demo of this machine. The XBRITE screen is really sharp, but
pretty susceptible to glare--I don't think you could use it outdoors or
anyplace with really harsh light.
