I am a novice.
Did I make a purchase mistake?

old set up:
cable modem to linksys router (rt41bu) then to pc's #1 and #2

linksys router died... so i bought an 8-port "desktop switch".

new attempted setup:
cable modem to d-link desktop switch(DGS-2208) then to pc's #1 and #2

now only one pc is connecting.

I've now been told that with a cable modem, that I must have a router for multiple pc's to connect. Is this true?

Thanks.

Unless you pay your ISP for more then 1 IP address.

A switch won't work... you need a router, or a layer 3 switch that is capable of NAT and dhcp.

Routers use NAT, which allows you to use private ip addresses on your internal network, and just 1 public IP address. ISP's only give you one IP address unless you pay for extras.

You'll need to pick up another router.
