Hard drive error The semaphore timeout period has expired

I cannot acees my data hard drive (I use 2 drives; oper. system and data) and get the following:

D:\ IS NOT ACCESSIBLE "The semaphore timeout period has expired"

Have a lot of data not yet backed up, PLEASE.. need help

Try running (as an Administrator) CHKDSK /R on the D drive from the command prompt, your D may have some bad clusters.
