Hello, I have a Iomega ldhd-up (prestige) 1TB external hard drive which I have owned for about 3-4 years. The enclosure case of the hard drive is very poorly designed and the port for the USB cable does not fit the cable tightly. Over the years I often would have to turn off the hard drive and adjust the cord so it would appear on my computer.

However, as of a couple weeks ago it is no longer appearing at all no matter what I do. (not on the desktop, or disk utility, or anywhere). It is making the same sounds and the light on the external is showing up as if should be working though.

I believe it the port chip needs to be replaced. I took it out of the case and it says ec02-015_10 on the chip.

I looked everywhere for a replacement chip but it just isn't sold or if it is it's going for 200$ bucks which is whack, since I could just buy a whole new external for like 90 bucks.

Is there another piece that I could use instead of the ec02-015_10? What type of connection does this chip have to the hard drive? What should I do to fix this?

You need a case that can handle a Sata 300 drive.

Here are examples of cases that would work. They are more expensive than the one I purchased, but the listings will give you all of the specs. You can get a USB 3.0 or USB 2.0 case and both will work..

The escalated price is because some people need to recover their valuable data (that they did not have backup of) and believe it $200 is cheap for that. Best solution is getting a new drive and if old data is needed spend the $200 and consider it lesson learned!

I had the exact same issue with my iomega drive. You DO NOT have to buy the same part. Instead, purchase a new external hard drive case and move the drive from the damaged case over to the new case. This will allow you to plug the drive into your computer again. Hard drive cases are very cheap. I purchased a new one for $10. This will get you going. You will lose the pretty iomega case (lol :D), but you will get the use of your drive back!

I purchased a StarTech case, but Diablotek also sells them. Actually a lot of places carry different types. Just remember to get one that has the Sata pin configuration you need. In my case, Sata 300.

LOL - I'm surprised that you would suggest that the person just spend $200 when there is no need to. Getting a new case is a whole lot cheaper and solves the problem. Making the person feel bad because he might not have had a backup doesn't solve the issue. The only lesson he has to learn is to keep the names of places that sell hard drive cases handy.
